Declutter Your Computer – Decluttering Your Email
Ready to to declutter your computer? There are four basic steps; in this article we cover decluttering your email from Professional Organiser Services Brisbane.
Decluttering your email is something most of us avoid. The first step is thinking about the future and how you want to work. For me, gmail is brilliant. First, it allows you to file emails in more than one place. So, if you get an email for membership of a software club, do you file it under “monthly memberships” or “software?” With gmail you can file it in both.
Also, the “search” capabilities within gmail come from the worlds top search engine. If you know one thing about the email you want to find, a gmail search will bring it up.
Gmail is also brilliant when you want to declutter your email. You can search for “2008” and locate all emails with the date 2008. The brave can select “delete all” but I recommend selecting all and then just running your eye down the list for things you should keep, like software licence details. Set display options to “50” and you can declutter your email real quick.
The final element of gmail is the “filters” capability. Among other things, this allows me to:
- Set a “Priority Inbox” filter
- “Skip” the Inbox for stuff I need to keep but for reference – great example is backups of your website (You DO backup your website, don’t you?) 🙂
- Apply labels automatically as mail comes in; I do not have to remember to file it, gmail does it for me as it downloads it!
- “Star It and Label It.” Using these two filters, I highlight incoming orders and deal with them before reading other email.
In subsequent articles, we will cover:
